West Dunbartonshire Sports Council is an independent forum committed to the development and promotion of sport within West Dunbartonshire.
SPORTS COUNCIL
Prior to local government re-organisation in 1996, Dumbarton District Council and Clydebank District Council both ran individual Sports Council with different rules, etc but it was felt that with the District Council's merging to form West Dunbartonshire, that it was only sensible that the Sports Council did likewise. So in 1996, West Dunbartonshire Sports Council was formed.
The principle aim of the Sports Council is to assist clubs and individuals with help, either monetary or advisory to allow them to compete and run as effectively as they can. Each year, West Dunbartonshire Council awards a grant towards this aim and additional money is brought in through affiliations. Only clubs who are affiliated can apply for monies from the Sports Council and affiliations are renewed annually, clubs being notified of price before it becomes due on 1st April each year. In certain circumstances, if it is not possible for someone to affiliate through their club, i.e. in the event their club is in Glasgow or elsewhere out with the area, then they can apply as an individual member.
Each year at the Annual General Meeting in May, a new executive committee is elected comprising of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Each club affiliated is entitled to send a representative to the meetings and the more who attend the better. Councillors are also nominated onto the committee and Education has a seat if they wish to take it up. The four main office bearers are essential or the Council will not grant assistance, and they stand for re-election each year.
Meetings of the Sports Council are held on the third Monday in each month from September through to June inclusive. Up until very recently, the venue was alternating between the Playdrome in Clydebank and the Burgh Hall in Dumbarton, however due to works being carried out at the Burgh Hall, all meetings are currently being conducted in Clydebank from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.
SPORTS INJURY CLINIC
The Sports Injury Clinic was set up by Dumbarton District Council and was originally held in the Meadow Centre, but circumstances dictated that more room was needed and it then moved to the Vale of Leven Hospital. This has been continued over the years by West Dunbartonshire Sports Council. We now have a rota system with seven physiotherapists on the list and one podiatrist. All staff are fully qualified and continually update their qualifications and provide an excellent service.
Anyone with a sports injury is entitled to make an appointment at the clinic. The clinic is held in the Physiotherapy Department at the Vale of Leven Hospital and only this who have pre-booked will be seen. The first appointment is 6.30 p.m. and the last 7.50 p.m. The maximum number of persons seen each Monday is 8.
Appointments are made by phoning the Meadow Centre Reception on 01389 734094. You will need to provide your name, address, tel number, age, what the injury is and the sport that relates to the injury. Once your appointment is made, if you find you are unable to attend then you must notify the Meadow Centre before 4.00 p.m. on the Monday. Failure to do this will mean you will be charged for the missed appointment.
There is a cost for this service which must be paid at the time of attendance, either by cash or cheque. For adults it is £15.00 and £12 for U/16s. However, if you are a member of a club affiliated to the Sports Council, then the cost is £12 for an adult. Anyone who states they are affiliated must prove this to the receptionist. Non residents of West Dunbartonshire Council, whether adult or child, will be charged at the rate of £15.00. If a return visit is needed for the same injury within a short time scale, the cost will be £12 for the second visit.
On the first Monday of each month, there is also a Podiatrist on duty who will deal with all foot problems if sports related. The charge for this is the same as for the physios at £15 for adult and £12 for child. However, he may charge for specialist treatment and this will be discussed at the appointment. If wishing to book for the podiatrist, the procedure is the same though state to the Meadow Centre reception that it is the podiatrist you are booking with.
